Why A Proper Zero Matters More Than You Think

If you've put an optic on a rifle and never properly zeroed it, you don't actually know where your bullet is going. You have a guess, and in a defensive situation, a guess can get someone killed—including someone you're trying to protect.

Zero theory isn't the most exciting topic in the shooting world, but it is one of the most foundational. Until you understand what your bullet is doing from the moment it leaves the barrel to the moment it hits the target, your foundation as a shooter has not been fully laid.

What Is a Zero?

A zero is the distance at which your point of aim matches your point of impact. When you look through your optic and place the reticle on a target, a properly zeroed firearm means the bullet hits exactly where you're aiming—at that specific distance.

The key word is distance. Your zero is only true at the distance you zeroed it. At every other distance, your bullet will impact either above or below your point of aim. Understanding by how much is what zero theory is all about.

Why the Bullet Doesn't Travel in a Straight Line

The moment a bullet leaves your barrel, it begins falling. Gravity starts acting on it immediately. The bullet does not rise out of the barrel—a common misconception. Instead, it begins dropping the instant it exits the muzzle, while its mass, velocity, and spin influence how it behaves in flight.

At the same time, your optic sits slightly above and behind the bore. Because of this, your barrel is actually angled upward ever so slightly when your sights are level on the target. The bullet travels in a gentle arc, crosses your line of sight on the way up, reaches its peak, and then falls back through your line of sight a second time.

Your chosen zero is where that descending bullet crosses your line of sight again. Every other distance requires some degree of hold adjustment.

Understanding Zero Distances

100-meter zero. The bullet crosses your line of sight at a shorter distance on the way up, reaches its apex, then returns to intersect your point of aim at 100 meters. Beyond that distance, the bullet continues dropping below your point of aim and you'll need to hold higher.

200-meter zero. The bullet follows a wider arc, crossing your line of sight around the 50-meter mark before reaching its peak and then returning to your point of aim at 200 meters. This is why a 50-meter zero is commonly used as a practical approximation of a 200-meter zero.

Why a 200-meter zero is often the better choice. With a 200-meter zero on a 5.56/.223 rifle, you can generally hold center mass from close range out to roughly 200 meters and still land within a few inches of your point of aim—roughly the size of a dessert plate or CD (if you remember those).

At 100 meters, the bullet is still climbing slightly and will impact a little high. At 300 meters, it begins dropping, but not dramatically. The 200-meter zero gives you the widest practical window of accuracy without requiring hold adjustments.

And under stress, you'll forget your holds. It happens to experienced shooters. Eliminate that variable by choosing a practical zero.

A Note on MOA and Adjustment Clicks

Whether you're running a magnified optic or a red dot, your adjustments work on the same principle. Most optics adjust in either MOA (Minute of Angle) or Milliradians (MIL).

One MOA equals approximately one inch of movement at 100 yards. A ¼-MOA click moves your point of impact roughly one-quarter inch at 100 yards, one-half inch at 200 yards, and so on.

Zeroing your rifle is simply the process of using those adjustments to move your point of impact until it matches your point of aim.

Read your optic's manual, understand its click values, and make deliberate corrections instead of guessing.

Building a Stable Platform to Zero From

All of this theory means nothing if your shooting position is inconsistent.

The goal is to remove as much human movement from the equation as possible so your group reflects where the rifle is actually shooting—not what your body is doing.

If you have access to a rifle sled, shooting bench, or bipod, use it. These tools minimize shooter-induced error and provide the most reliable data.

If you don't have those, a proper prone position is your next best option.

Lay directly behind the rifle with your body in line with the bore. Your body should absorb recoil naturally rather than resisting it from an angle. Keep your ankles flat, your elbows planted wide, and use your magazine as a monopod if needed. Modern magazines and rifles are designed to tolerate this without issue.

A good prone position should feel sustainable. If you're constantly fighting the rifle to stay on target, your position needs work.

Grip the rifle lightly. Excess muscle tension introduces unnecessary movement. Let the ground support the rifle and focus solely on a smooth trigger press.

One additional tip: when using a red dot, turn the brightness down to the lowest setting that still allows you to see the dot clearly. A smaller, dimmer dot provides a more precise aiming point and produces tighter groups during zeroing.

Consistency Is Everything

Your zero is only as reliable as your consistency.

Your head position, cheek weld, trigger press, breathing, and body alignment should all be repeatable from shot to shot. Many shooters even reference their nose position against the charging handle to ensure a consistent cheek weld every time.

If your groups suddenly begin shifting and you haven't touched your optic, the most likely variable isn't the rifle.

It's you.

The Bottom Line

Zero your rifle. Understand how your bullet behaves at different distances. Then train until that knowledge becomes automatic.

The good news is this doesn't have to consume an entire day. With a stable shooting platform and a basic understanding of what you're doing, you can establish a solid zero in just a handful of groups.

The military used to turn it into an all-day event. It doesn't have to be.
